What to expect at Phinizy Swamp Nature Park

Phinizy Swamp Nature Park is a public wetland park where you can combine a trail walk with bird and wildlife viewing. The park’s landscape includes the Butler Creek floodplain and Equalization Pond, with routes that range from a short boardwalk to a longer loop.

The land has a long human history. The Augusta Museum of History links Native American presence in the area to the Paleo-Indian Period, approximately 10,000 years ago. It also identifies Italian entrepreneur Ferdinand Victor Francois Phinizy as the first to see the area as a business opportunity.

Park information names great blue herons, red-shouldered hawks, river otters and alligators among the wildlife you may encounter. You can also look for signs of beaver, river otter and muskrat activity along the floodplain boardwalk.
